Summer Events Newsletter

In addition to reminders about individual events, I’m going to try to put out a periodic newsletter to consolidate the details and dates of upcoming events.   As always, I welcome ideas from members for additional or future events.
Recent Event Recaps:

Thanks to everyone who came out this past weekend to the Urge Bowling and Bocce event.  We had a great time hanging out with club members and friends while bowling, playing bocce, and drinking beers.  Special thanks to Tom Wood for taking the lead on organizing the event.

Photos are posted here:

We also recently had an amazing annual Beer and Cheese Pairing event at Wild Barrel Brewing.  Special thanks go out to Dr. Bill, Bill Sobieski, and the whole staff at Wild Barrel for accommodating us and making it an event to remember.
You can see some photos from the event here:

This year Booze Bros will be making an American-style Wit base that members can take home and do whatever they want to it; the results can be surprising! Sign up for how much you want, pay by the gallon–this is finished yeast-ready wort!

Sign up on the interest page and pledge your interest here:

Date:  Wednesday, June 20th @ Booze Bros Brewery in Vista

Time: – about 6:00 PM (give or take) since we never know EXACTLY when it’ll be done

Cost: – 2.50 per gallon, all in

How to pay: Preferred: PayPal, Venmo or Zelle to Jacques. Or Exact change and Cash on the day of the event.

To make the evening more fun, I’ve asked Maurey if he can put some fun and funky beers on tap for us and he said he’d do it. I also asked that if there won’t be a food truck if we could bring pizza for us all and they’re OK with that. I’ve put it on the spreadsheet to gauge interest. We can bring bottles to share but they can only be in the event room.

If you can’t make it, try to find a friend who can bring (and pick up) a vessel for you. Maybe we can get them to hold a few a day or so if that helps.

Event: Lambic Kegging 2015

The 2015 Lambic Kegging session will be held on Oktober 10th starting at 1:30pm at the Gamelin picobrewery in Vista. We have close to 150 gallons of Lambic to keg, which is the largest club brew we have ever done. We will start by pulling a growler from each barrel for sampling. Members can select which barrel they would like to receive. We will be prioritizing kegs for members that participated in the Lambic brew session and those that can commit to bring a Lambic keg to the Southern California Homebrew Festival. We will also make sure that everyone who participates can bring back at least a growler of club Lambic.

We will also have barrel dregs for you to bring home to brew your own Lambic. We would like to encourage everyone to brew a Lambic on Sunday and use these barrel dregs for the brew.

I will have three Lambics on draft, A Gueuze blend of 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 Lambics, a blended Apricôt and a blended Framboise. As always you are welcome to bring bottles to share.

Every year at this time I become antsy as we don’t open the barrels to taste them. So, hopefully this years Lambic will be as good as the 2013 and 2014 batches!

Please RSVP here if you plan to attend:

Event: SBE Target Shooting Night

We are putting together a Society of Barley Engineers shooting night event. It will be on Tues 10/6 starting at 6pm. We will gather at Iron Sights shooting range in Oceanside for some target shooting. This is a great opportunity to do some target shooting in a safe environment with fellow club members. Afterwards, we will head over to Tap That for some beers. If you have a Tap That pint glass bring it in for $1 off pints on Tuesdays.

Anyone with their own gun(s) is welcome to bring them. People who do not have guns may rent them at the range (typically $6). Range fees should be around $10-14 per person. For ammo, you may bring your own approved ammo, purchase ammo at the range, or participate in a group buy for discounted ammo (about 1/2 of range price). Ammo cost will depend on how much you shoot. If you bring your own ammo, it cannot contain steel or be “Wolf” brand ammo, they will check it with a magnet. Ear and eye protection are provided free of charge. Paper targets may be brought from home or purchased at the range for a small fee.

Please RSVP here:

Note: if you wish to get in on the group ammo buy, we will need your RSVP within the next two weeks.

Event: Stone Farms Summer Picnic

Join the Barley Engineers for a late summer potluck at the picnic-friendly Stone Farms. A stone’s throw from their brewery in Escondido, Stone Farms is a relaxed location to enjoy some vittles, drink some beers from their taps, and stroll the farms. We’ll meet at 1 PM and stay until we get hot, tired, or they kick us out (6 PM). There are shaded picnic areas scattered around the farms and there should be plenty of space for us all, feel free to bring any of your favorite picnic games.

Please sign up to bring a main, side, or desert to serve at least a dozen people. I’ll update the form or send an email out of we get over-loaded on any particular dish.

Stone Farms also appears to be dog-friendly, but if anyone has dogs that like to eat chickens or peacocks, Stone would probably be pretty unhappy.

Note: The barn only has water and Stone beer available. We cannot bring any of our own alcohol onto the premises.

– Sunday, August 23rd
– 1:00 PM until we get tired or they kick us out (6:00 PM)

– Stone Farms
– 9928 Protea Gardens Rd Escondido, CA 92026

Hope to see y’all there!

SBE May Pub Night – Irina’s

Our first pub night of 2015 will be Wednesday, May 13th, at Irina’s Bar and Grill in Oceanside. For anyone not familiar, they are a little pub with good German and other bar food, and a good tap and bottle selection of local and German beers. They’ll provide happy hour pricing for us all evening.

There are a couple of pool tables as well as bar trivia (anyone up for a contest?) and Golden Tee. And for anyone interested, we can make this a mini pub-crawl, as Legacy Brewing and the Tap That tap room are a few blocks away.

The event starts at 6PM, and we hope to see lots of you there.

Weds, May 13, 6pm
